Meet our Queensland Nature Guides
Your guides are Terry Reis and Kate Grundy, and when you "Contact Us" you will be contacting us directly. This is our backyard and we know where and when to take you. We have a lifetime of experience chasing our passion of finding wildlife. We created Cairns Wildlife Tours to share our long-aquired knowledge of the Wet Tropics biodiversity hotspot with other passionate people from around the world.
Ecological and conservation scientists
We are not run-of-the mill guides. We are professional working fauna ecologists and university qualified environmental scientists, with expertise well beyond simply finding fauna.
Terry
Terry brings years of professional guiding experience, having guided in Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and Brazil.
Residing in Yungaburra on the Atherton Tablelands, Terry is familiar with the behaviour and locations of the local wildlife. With a background in conservation ecology, he has a deep understanding of the relationship between our region's endemic species and the environments they inhabit. He is a knowledgeable guide and takes pleasure in sharing his experience with interested guests.
Terry has recorded more than 1,300 species of mammal, bird, reptile and frog on mainland Australia and Tasmania. He has a passion for wildlife photography, as evident in the gallery.
Terry is a member of the Records Appraisal Committee for Birds Queensland, assessing records of rare birds for the state.
Kate
Living on the Coorong in South Australia, Kate had a natural interest in birds and aquatic wildlife from an early age. The Coorong, a long, shallow lagoon at the end of Australia's largest river system, supports over 240 bird species.
After moving to Cairns, Kate worked in ecotourism on the Great Barrier Reef and in hospitality. She then obtained a degree in Environmental Science majoring in Conservation Ecology.
Kate has worked as an ecologist since 2010, conducting fauna and flora assessments in a very wide range of habitats, from the desert in South Australia to the rainforest of Queensland's Wet Tropics. Kate's work has included surveys for aquatic macroinvertebrates and stygofauna and targeted surveys for threatened fish, frog, bird and mammal species.
Kate and Terry have worked together since 2011. They spend their spare time out-and-about in the Cairns and Atherton Tablelands regions, spotlighting and chasing rare bird sightings, or planning their next wildlife-focused interstate or international adventure.
